Forget about having one signature style, because for Gen Z, it’s all about the mood. One day it’s low-rise jeans and a baby tee, next it’s baggy hoddies and sneakers, by the weekend it could be a saree, chunky jewellery and sneakers.
There is no one size fits all ‘Gen Z Fashion’ look.
- Y2K

Low-rise jeans, baby tees, minis, bags that tie around the waist, chunky shoes — Y2K is all about the nostalgia and the throwback. Gen Z is all about re-appropriating the aesthetics of the 90s, but with a new twist.
It’s the ‘I really wish I was born in 2002’
2. Clean Girl

The clean girl aesthetic runs on neutral tones, slicked back hair, gold hoops, minimal makeup and minimalistic yet sharp silhouettes. It’s all about having things put together without trying too hard, because everything really does look good on you anyway.
It’s the ‘I didn’t try, but I really did’
3. Coquette

If you thought bows and ribbons and anything pastel was strictly for little girls, then you haven’t discovered the coquette aesthetic yet. It’s all about mixing girlish silhouettes and colours and shoes with a mature twist, and letting the bows speak for themselves.
It’s the ‘everything looks good with a bow’
4. Streetwear

Baggy jeans, oversized tees, cargo pants, hoddies, sneakers, caps — streetwear is all about being comfortable while looking cool. It’s a mix of genders and silhouettes and styles that don’t necessarily follow any rules but the ones you set yourself.
It’s the ‘comfort first and foremost’
5. Old Money

Tailored trousers, button downs, knitwear, loafers, minimalistic yet sharp silhouettes — the old money aesthetic mixes together the looks of previous eras and puts them together in a way that screams ‘preppy’ and ‘sharp’ without trying too hard.
It’s the ‘quiet luxury’
6. Vintage/Thrift

The love for second hand clothing seems to be growing stronger with every passing day, because who doesn’t want to have something unique? Vintage jackets, jeans, tshirts and accessories are a staple for many fashion lovers who want to stand out from the crowd.
It’s the ‘no one else has this’
7. Desi Core

Kurtas with jeans, jhumkas with dresses, sarees with trendy blouses, traditional jewellery with sneakers — mixing Indian and western clothing seems to be the new normal for Gen Z. It’s about finding the best in both worlds and making it your own.
It’s the ‘desi but make it mine’
8. Gorpcore

Cargo pants, gorpcore vests, technical jackets, hiking shoes — the gorpcore aesthetic is all about being prepared for anything. It may have started as a niche clothing style for hikers, but gorpcore has now entered the mainstream.
It’s the ‘I look good enough to go trekking’
And so,
this is Gen Z in fashion — where everyone can be someone, somewhere, in an aesthetic. The same girl can be Y2K one day, minimalistic the next and total desi the following. Perhaps Gen Z doesn’t have style, because style is supposed to be static, but in truth, Gen Z has moods — and a wardrobe for every one of them.
Gen Z fashion is less about having one fixed signature style and more about expressing different moods through clothing. From Y2K nostalgia, clean-girl minimalism and coquette femininity to streetwear, old money, vintage, Desi Core and gorpcore, Gen Z freely mixes aesthetics, cultures and silhouettes. The result is a flexible approach to fashion where the same person can embrace a completely different look from one day to the next.
