From what i remember and for as long as i can remember, summers used to mean holidays, cold drinks, hot afternoons and finding a shady place to sit underneath and relax. Really hot days used to be seldom and far between.

Things are different now. The relationship with summer is beginning to change. For instance, there is a particular moment in summer when you realize the heat is no longer just uncomfortable.You wake up at night, throw the blanket aside and reach for the fan. The room is still warm. Outside, the streets are quiet, but the air doesn’t feel much cooler. By morning, you check the weather almost out of habit, hoping for a drop in temperature.

There isn’t one.

In 2026, extreme heat has once again become a major concern in different parts of the world.

Extreme heat has become increasingly frequent and intense in Europe and across the globe. The Copernicus Climate Change Service reported exceptional temperatures: June 2026 was the second-warmest June globally, while Western Europe experienced its warmest June on record.

What is happening? Heatwaves are affecting daily routines, putting pressure on electricity systems, challenging outdoor workers and forcing cities to rethink how they deal with rising temperatures.

The strange part is that heat doesn’t always arrive with a dramatic warning.Sometimes, it simply stays.One hot day becomes three. Three become a week. The nights remain warm, the pavement keeps radiating heat and ordinary tasks start requiring more planning.Eventually, you begin to wonder whether summer itself has changed.

This Summer Has Felt Different
