Unable to sleep, a young woman finds herself confronting buried emotions, unanswered questions, and a difficult truth that could change everything.

Sometimes, the hardest battles are the ones no one can see. When the world falls silent and the night grows still, the thoughts we manage to ignore during the day can become impossible to escape. For her, this was one of those nights. She stood beside her bed, staring through her bedroom window at the pitch-black sky. It was late, but she couldn’t sleep. A strange confusion weighed heavily on both her head and her heart.

Absentmindedly, she rubbed the back of her neck, hoping to ease the tension and stiffness in her body.

When that failed, she reached for the painkillers that had been sitting on the dresser for a while and swallowed them. That ought to dull the throbbing pain in my head, she thought. She closed her eyes and took a steadying breath. That’s when she remembered the scene again.

She had been serving customers at the café all morning and into the afternoon. She was looking forward to her lunch break when she suddenly heard an achingly familiar voice behind her.

“Miss, can I have a decent cup of coffee and two chocolate doughnuts?”

THE MEETING

She whirled around so quickly that she toppled the tray of freshly baked biscuits she was carrying. The biscuits scattered across the floor.

She saw him then. For a moment, she thought he couldn’t be real. Surely she was imagining things. He watched her flustered reaction and smiled. Whether it was a smile of amusement or one tinged with sadness, she couldn’t tell.Gathering herself, she bent down to pick up the scattered biscuits and placed the tray back on the counter. He helped her without saying a word.

Of course he did.

He had always been helpful. When they had finished cleaning up, she returned to work. She prepared his order—a freshly brewed cup of coffee and two chocolate doughnuts—and carried it over to his table. As she turned to leave, he gently caught her hand. “Can we talk?” he whispered, almost pleading. She glared at him. “I’m at work.” “Please, hear me out, dear,” he pleaded again.

For the rest of her shift, he remained seated in the far corner of the café. His coffee and doughnuts sat untouched as he quietly watched her every move.

THE APOLOGY AND GOOD BYE

His steady gaze made her uncomfortable, but she didn’t want to create a scene, not while she was working.

When the last customer had finally left, he approached her once more. “Please, sweetheart. Just give me those five minutes, and I’ll be gone.” “Make it quick,” she replied, folding her arms across her chest as though she could shield herself from whatever explanation he had for the betrayal five years ago.

“I need your forgiveness,” he said quietly. “What I did five years ago is inexcusable, but I had my limitations back then.” “You have every right to hate me, if I was in your place I would, but I need you to know that im sorry for the pain I have caused you and that I have never stopped caring,” He took a deep breath then as if he was trying hard not to break down in front of her.

When he had steadied himself, he looked directly in her eyes, gently took her hand in his and pressed a soft kiss to her fingers. Without another word, he turned on his heel and walked away. Just as he had five years ago.

She had never expected those words from him. That he had said them and left made her feel heartbroken and wounded once again.

She walked over to the empty chair where he had been sitting just moments ago. Unable to hold herself together any longer, she doubled over and cried, her hiccups shattering the silence of the café.
