The Last Train Ticket – My Mother’s Brave Journey

My mother asked me to clean her room today. While I was cleaning her old wooden trunk, I found something very special inside it. It was an old train ticket. The color of the ticket had turned yellow and the paper was very soft. The date on the ticket was 15th August 1985. The ticket was from Lahore to Karachi.
I immediately took the ticket to my mother and asked her about it. When she saw the ticket, she smiled. Her eyes became full of memories. She sat down and told me the whole story behind this small piece of paper.
She told me that in 1985, she was only 20 years old. She had just finished her studies and she got her first job offer from a school in Karachi. At that time, we used to live in Lahore. For a young girl in 1985, traveling alone from Lahore to Karachi was a very big thing. It was not easy like today.
My mother said she had only one small bag with her clothes and this train ticket. She was very scared. The railway station was very crowded. The train was full of people. She did not know where she would stay in Karachi. But she also had a lot of hope in her heart. She wanted to make her parents proud and start her own life.
The journey was very long. It took almost 20 hours. She told me that during the whole journey she kept this ticket tightly in her hand because she was afraid to lose it. When she finally reached Karachi, she started crying because she was tired and alone, but also happy because she had completed her first brave journey.
She worked in Karachi for 5 years. That job changed her whole life. She became a strong and independent woman. After that, she got married and came back to Lahore.

Now after almost 40 years, we still have this ticket. When I hold this ticket, I feel that it is not just a paper. It is a symbol of my mother’s courage, hard work, and hope. It reminds me that if you have courage in your heart, you can travel even with fear.
My mother told me to keep this ticket safe in my diary. She said, “Whenever you feel scared to do something new, just look at this ticket and remember that your mother also started with fear but she never gave up.”
This small yellow ticket taught me a big lesson. Old things are not just trash. They have stories and lessons hidden inside them. They connect our past with our present. I am very proud of my mother and I will always keep her last train ticket safe.
Moral: Courage is not about not being afraid, it is about traveling even when you are afraid.
When I hold this ticket, I also think about how times have changed. Today we book tickets on our phones in one minute. But in 1985, getting The Last Train Ticket was a big struggle. My mother had to stand in a long queue for hours. There was no guarantee of getting a seat. This is why she valued it so much. This ticket also taught me that courage is not about not being afraid. Courage is about traveling alone even when your heart is beating fast. My mother was scared, but she still went. Now whenever I feel scared to do something new, like my first job interview, I look at this yellow ticket. It gives me strength. It tells me that if my mother could travel alone at 20, I can also do anything. That is why The Last Train Ticket will always be our family treasure.
